Everything You Need to Know About CBD

Nothing seems to be stopping the rise of CBD, which seems to be in everything from oils to sprays, capsules, creams and even milkshakes and chewing gum. And as CBD’s popularity grows, so do the number of irreputable stockists. So how do you know you’re not being conned into buying a ‘miracle cure’? And how do you know if it’s safe for you?

If you’re thinking of giving CBD a try, we’ve put together some guidelines for starting out with CBD, and answer the questions you need to know about taking CBD, particularly if you’re an older adult.

How to Choose the Right CBD

First of all, make sure you’re using a quality product that contains what it says on the label. A recent report found that more than half of the most popular CBD oils sold on the high street didn’t contain what they claimed to on the label, with one ‘CBD oil’ containing no CBD at all! The same industry report found that our products contained exactly what they should, and were ‘one of the most compliant, high quality and accurately labelled products’ that they tested.

When choosing a CBD product, make sure it uses CBD from organic hemp, preferably grown in the British Isles and that it is third-party lab tested to verify the CBD content and rule out any contaminants.

How do you Use CBD Oil?

First of all, let’s start with the basics. CBD is a molecule derived from hemp, a strain of the cannabis family. It is non-euphoric-inducing, which means it won’t cause you to feel high, but it does have an effect on the neurotransmitters and chemistry of your brain, just like an antidepressant or a sleep aid would have.

Is CBD Safe to Use?

There’s been no documented overdose of CBD, it doesn’t cause euphoria and can be used from very low quantities up to higher quantities. If you’re wondering how much you should take, we have a CBD Oil Calculator here, but we’d recommend starting at a very low amount – just a few drops – and gradually increase your daily serving. Then wait to see if you feel any kind of response. There are approximately 20 drops in one full dropper of our CBD oil, and one drop of 5% CBD oil contains about 2.5mg of CBD.

How Much CBD is Right For You?

CBD is one of the molecules that reacts with your endocannabinoid system within your body, an internal system of receptors that helps regulate our wellbeing and make sure our body’s systems work efficiently with each other. Everyone’s endocannabinoid system is different, your metabolism is different, and you will react to CBD in a different way. The only way to know if CBD is going to work for you, and how much to take is to take a consistent approach to taking CBD oil, and as they say, ‘start low and go slow’. What About CBD and Other Medications?

Just as you would with starting any new supplement regime, it’s crucial to talk to your doctor about all the vitamins, supplements, prescription and over-the-counter medications you’re taking. CBD may have the potential to interact with some medications, so it’s wise to check with your doctor first. Then, as with any new supplement routine, take some time to try a consistent amount every day and monitor how you’re feeling. Some people find it useful to make a note of how much they took and how they felt afterwards to monitor how the amount affects them, and then adjust to suit your individual reactions.

Your doctor may also be able to recommend a quality CBD product that fits with your needs. You can find your own reputable products by ensuring you’re choosing a trusted CBD brand that publishes third party lab reports, uses high quality organic hemp and is transparent about their CBD products, like us here at Jersey Hemp.
